Adam Grey’s Proposal to the People of the State of California, Amendment to the Constitution of the State, Amending Section 19 of Article IV, Relating to Gaming

Adam Gray, Assembly Member announced the introduction of an amendment this week. Details of the introduction include an authorization of a referendum that will allow sports betting in the state. Gray’s bill will only be effective if the current federal laws on sports gaming are changed and this will be contingent on the upcoming sports betting lawsuit that is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court.

Gray said in a statement,

“It is time to bring this multibillion dollar industry out of the shadows. We need to crack down on illegal and unregulated online gaming and replace it with a safe and responsible option which includes safeguards against compulsive and underage gambling, money laundering and fraud.”

Gray has been pushing for online poker legalization for some time. He says that Californians are already playing and betting through “unscrupulous websites” and that the state needs to get inon the action with revenues.

The bill will have to reach voters in order for it to be approved. If voted for it will then need a two-thirds majority in each of the statehouse’.

Gray added,

“All other gaming activities in California are subject to regulations that ensure the safety of consumers. Sports wagering should be treated no differently.”
